Tagliyot (Discoveries): Temple Beth Elohim's *NEW* STEM-Based Learning Program for Students in Grades 4 & 5
Tagliyot (Discoveries) - pronounced tahg-lee-yote - is our newest approach to Jewish learning for Grades 4 and 5, launching during the 2016-2017/5777 year! The program encourages students to explore, create and discover as they engage in innovative learning experiences and navigate their Jewish journey through the areas of science, technology, engineering, math and design thinking.
Explore connections between
science and technology and
Jewish values and identity
through innovative hands-on learning
Discover Jewish texts, values,
history and holidays - and the
roles they play in our daily lives
Create new designs, prototypes, models and approaches to look at
the relationships we have with ourselves and the world around us
The Tagliyot curriculum has been carefully crafted to provide students with innovative, thoughtful, challenging and creative learning experiences. Students engage in Jewish learning centered around three overarching lenses each year:
The Space Around Us סביבנו
The Space Between Us בינינו
The Space Within Us בתוכנו
These lenses will frame the exploration of a range of Jewish topics including t'filah, text, mitzvot, and holidays; and allow students to explore how they interact and understand Jewish traditions and values in the world around them, between their friends and in their relationships, and within themselves. Each unit will include guiding text, a few smaller projects, and one larger project culminating in a family program and/or exhibit.
We're currently in the lab - more information about our curricular goals coming soon!

The Tagliyot Experience
Tagliyot meets 15 times a year plus 2 additional enrichment days, from 1:45-4:15pm for a STEM-based learning exploration. They also meet for an additional two hours per week either on a weekday afternoon or Sunday second session for Hebrew during which students will participate in small-group Hebrew learning. A family program will take place at the end of each unit; examples include: witnessing the exhibition of their child’s work, engaging in an experiment or discovery session, and/or participating in a guest speaker’s presentation. There are two Tagliyot field trips per year. In addition, families will stay connected to their child’s learning through photo documentation/emails highlighting featured topics, discussion points, goals, and project as well as three opportunities for parents’ parallel learning.
The Tagliyot Hebrew curriculum is designed to parallel the learning that occurs in Limud in Grades 4 and 5. Using a variety of innovative methods, we aim for each student to achieve the following to the best of his/her ability:
Three 20-minute rotations. One iPad mini. Lots of exploring & creating!
