Jessica and her fiancé, Warren Quat, come to us from Honolulu where, for the past three years, she was the Director of Education and Youth Programming at Temple Emanu-El. During her tenure, she transformed the congregation’s approach to Jewish learning by focusing on experiential education, creating a high school program and doubling the size of the school.
Born in Saint Louis, Missouri, Jessica grew up in the mid-west. She attended Goldman Union Camp Institute as both a camper and a counselor throughout her child and young adulthood. She received a B.A.S. in Political Science and Jewish studies from Indiana University in Bloomington. Jessica is a graduate of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, with a Masters in Jewish Education at the Rhea Hirsch School for Jewish Education in Los Angeles, California.
In her cover letter to us, Jessica eloquently described her role as a Jewish educator:
“For Reform Jews, Jewish education is the vehicle that provides individualized road maps for our learners to experience, experiment, integrate and instill the gems of Judaism into their own lives. I believe it is incumbent upon me as a Jewish educator to help my learners articulate for themselves what aspects of Judaism they find personally meaningful. My role is that of a tour guide, guiding each learner to choose a Jewish itinerary that best fits his or her interests and needs. In the end it is the traveler who must make the final decision and feel good about the choices made.”
While she and Warren will have to adjust to our New England winters, they are excited to be in Wellesley and begin this new journey. We are fortunate to have Jessica and Warren with us. Please join join me welcoming them into our TBE family.
